Strengthening Cross-Cultural Ties: Students from Taiwan and Indonesia Unite in 2025 Online Exchange

On May 27, 2025, students from Taipei Municipal Chengyuan Senior High School (Taiwan) and Madrasah Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (Indonesia) took part in an enriching online exchange program that highlighted the power of dialogue, learning, and intercultural understanding.

Organized by the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO) in Indonesia, and supported by the Taiwan Education Center (TEC) Indonesia – Yogyakarta Regional Office, the event brought together youth from both countries for a dynamic cultural experience. The session was moderated by M. Bima Aoron Hafiz, Manager of TEC Yogyakarta, alongside Assistant Manager Dinda Andriandita. Their facilitation helped set a warm, engaging tone for the entire program.

The event began with welcoming remarks from Ms. Grace Ou, Director of the Education Division at TETO Indonesia, who emphasized the importance of international cooperation in education and youth development. Following this, school principals Ms. Liu Wei-Jui of Chengyuan and Mr. Aly Aulia of Mu’allimin expressed their excitement about the collaboration and the value such exchanges bring to students’ academic and personal growth.

After a brief group photo to commemorate the occasion, students moved into the main part of the program—a cultural exchange session focused on food, language, and traditions. A student from Chengyuan introduced aspects of Taiwanese culture, sharing insights into local cuisine and linguistic diversity. This was followed by a student from Mu’allimin, who presented on Indonesian culture, with a spotlight on Yogyakarta’s rich heritage. These exchanges sparked curiosity, reflections, and a deeper appreciation for each other’s backgrounds.

To add a fun and interactive element, the program included a Kahoot quiz that engaged participants in a friendly competition based on the cultural content presented. The session concluded with thoughtful closing remarks by the moderator, bringing the event to an official close while underscoring the significance of friendship, respect, and shared learning across cultures.

Beyond being a moment of connection, the exchange served as a stepping stone toward deeper collaboration between the two schools. With shared enthusiasm, both institutions look forward to future initiatives, including student visits and joint educational programs.

This exchange proved that even a short virtual meeting can spark meaningful relationships and inspire young people to think globally. As students from Chengyuan and Mu’allimin reflected on the day, it was clear that this dialogue had not only deepened their understanding of each other’s cultures but also strengthened the spirit of unity across borders.
