Same as in Indonesia, an education system in Taiwan is consists of six years of basic education or an elementary school, three years of junior high school and three years of high school. And at a higher level, there are universities, institutes, and graduate schools and lasts from September until June next year. Before that, the compulsory education in Taiwan was only implemented for nine years which is only until junior high school. However, this policy was renewed in 2014 and made into a twelve years of compulsory education period for students. In its application to the new one, the government made several new policies including free exam policy to high school level, decentralizing the curriculum, creating a good quality for early childhood education, provide subsidies and support for underprivileged students, enhance vocational programs, develop arts education and promote e-learning programs. At the high school level, when students sit in grades 10 and 11, they will receive core lessons such as Chinese, English, Citizenship and Philosophy which certainly leads to Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Sun Yat-sen was a key leader of the Chinese revolution and was widely recognized as the Father of the Modern China, both in Mainland China and Taiwan. When in the 12th grade, Taiwan students are allowed to choose a specialization in the social sciences or natural/engineering sciences. And for the vocational schools, they offer a pathway to employment by providing additional specialist education such as civil engineering, electricity, computers or business. Then if students want to continue their study in university, there are several ways:
- Performance-based
Performance-based is a combination of Subject Competency Test and Designated Subject Examination result. Subject Competency Test are several tests conducted within 100 minutes on subjects such as Chinese, English, Mathematics, Natural and Social Sciences. And for Designated Subject Examination is intended to test the depth of knowledge in a particular specialization which is obtained from 1-3 subjects. - Recommendation and performance-based
In this case, high school can recommend their students to one of the faculties on a particular campus. Then, students take the Subject Competency Test there. After that, the faculty can choose to be accompanied by additional tests, such as interview tests or additional assessments in other forms. - Self-selection
In this case, students can register for the faculty separately. It means, they don’t have to register collectively with their school. the selection process is similar to the Recommendation and performance-based test.
Based on the information, the education system in Taiwan is not much different from the education system in Indonesia.
